The Shepherd And The Maiden Ghost
The Shepherd And The Maiden Ghost
\r\n
\r\n't was an eve in late summer, autumn was nigh
\r\nstill a warm sun did colour the sky
\r\nThe meadows did shine in a strange golden light
\r\nand vales did forth the soft haze of night
\r\n
\r\nWhen through the air a voice did resound
\r\nbeckoning the shepherd to rise from the ground
\r\n
\r\n[THE SHEPHERD:]
\r\n\"What sweet voice does sing in such a woebegone tone?
\r\nWhat maiden does wander the heather alone?\"
\r\n
\r\nBewitched by its tone, he followed her song,
\r\nwhilst the sun did descend and the shadows grew long
\r\nIn the dim light of dusk, near the sparkling cascade
\r\non a moss covered stone sat a crying young maid
\r\n
\r\n[THE SHEPHERD:]
\r\n\"Why art thou dreary? What happened to thee?
\r\nWhat song didst thou sing so woefully?\"
\r\n
\r\n[THE MAIDEN:]
\r\n\"Go whither O shepherd! Don't sadden thine heart
\r\nThou canst not help me - not thou who thou art!
\r\nAn old man who's been born in a cradle of wood
\r\nof a tree that at least a hundred years stood,
\r\ncut by a boy who at heart was still pure -
\r\nmight be my redeemer if he knew that he could...\"
