If you visit American city,
\r\nYou will find it very pretty.
\r\nJust two things of which you must beware:
\r\nDon't drink the water and don't breathe the air.
\r\n
\r\nPollution, pollution,
\r\nThey got smog and sewage and mud.
\r\nTurn on your tap and get hot and cold running crud.
\r\n
\r\nSee the halibuts and the sturgeons
\r\nBeing wiped out by detergents.
\r\nFish gotta swim and birds gotta fly,
\r\nBut they don't last long if they try.
\r\n
\r\nPollution, pollution,
\r\nYou can use the latest toothpaste,
\r\nAnd then rinse your mouth with industrial waste.
\r\n
\r\nJust go out for a breath of air,
\r\nAnd you'll be ready for Medicare.
\r\nThe city streets are really quite a thrill.
\r\nIf the hoods don't get you, the monoxide will.
\r\n
\r\nPollution, pollution,
\r\nWear a gas mask and a veil.
\r\nThen you can breathe, long as you don't inhale.
\r\n
\r\nLots of things there that you can drink,
\r\nBut stay away from the kitchen sink.
\r\nThrow out your breakfast garbage, and I've got a hunch
\r\nThat the folks downstream will drink it for lunch.
\r\n
\r\nSo go to the city, see the crazy people there.
\r\nLike lambs to the slaughter,
\r\nThey're drinking the water
\r\nAnd breathing (cough) the air.
