Love You Goodbye
He was thinking back when he was a kid
\r\nHis folks were divorced
\r\nHis old man high on something
\r\nCame knocking at the door
\r\nHis mama wouldn't talk to him
\r\nShe said boy dontcha let him in
\r\n
\r\nShe was cussing and pacing and wasting her life
\r\nOn that linoleum floor
\r\nHe took him back to his old apartment
\r\nTurned off the TV
\r\nHis beautiful broken hero on the couch
\r\nPassed out asleep
\r\nAnd he put 'em to bed
\r\nWith tears in his eyes
\r\nHe said dad I love you, Goodbye
\r\n
\r\nHe headed out into the night
\r\nSeventeen years old
\r\nFired up that rusty old pickup
\r\nTurned his collar to the cold
\r\nAnd he headed back to mama's place
\r\nReady for his big escape
\r\nAnd he tiptoed up the stairs and left a note
\r\nIn the cover's fold
\r\n
\r\nIt said mom I wish I could wave a wand
\r\nAnd make you smile again
\r\nBring back the man who stole your heart
\r\n'fore the demons got to him
\r\nIf I stay here any longer
\r\nSomething sacreds gonna die
\r\nHe said mom I love you, Goodbye
\r\n
\r\nTook a lot of wrong turns on the road
\r\nFinding his life
\r\nBy the grace of God he ended up
\r\nWith a little boy and a wife
\r\nAnd the phone call came from his sister
\r\nIt was that old familiar pain
\r\nHis mother was at the doorstep
\r\nOf heaven's pure white light
\r\n
\r\nAt the end of the service
\r\nHis father came up to him
\r\nClear eyed and sober now he said
\r\nBoy Jesus took my sins
\r\nAnd I pray someday maybe you'll forgive me too
\r\nWith tears in his eyes
\r\nHe said son I love you, Goodbye
\r\n
\r\nHis plane touched down in Texas
\r\nHe pulled out his phone
\r\nDialed in the number, got the machine
\r\nOf his old man's home
\r\nHe said dad we got an extra room
\r\nAnd your grandson has your eyes
\r\nCouldn't say anything else
\r\nCause he started to cry
\r\nAnd he choked out dad I love you, Goodbye
\r\n
\r\nDad I love you, Goodbye
