Food Chains
A musical Lecture by Glenn Wolkenfeid
\r\nOh a huclear happens deep inside the sun,
\r\nWhere hydrogen atoms are fused into helium.
\r\nThen the heat and light is radiated into space.
\r\nIn 90 milion miles it shines upon the Earth”s face.
\r\nFor every hundred calories that shine out from the sun.
\r\nThe calories that green plants trap will number only one.
\r\nBut evry single calorie in ocean, hills, and plains,
\r\nWill serve as a foundation for a living food chain.
\r\nAt the bottom of a food chain are producers like green plants.
\r\nWhose cells make food from sunlight making use of chloroplasts.
\r\nIt happens in the pines and flowers on your windowsill.
\r\nCause every single green plant”s got a little chlorophyll.
\r\nWell the next step in a food chain is a primary consumer,
\r\nAn herbivoric cow or vegetarian baby boomer.
\r\nA primary consumer spends it”s mealtimes eating plant.
\r\nIt might be buffalo or might be an ant.
\r\nEach level in a food chain yields only ten percent,
\r\nOf the former level’s energy you might ask where it went.
\r\nThere are bones and leaves you can’t digest that really make a dent.
\r\nAnd don’t ignore the weighty cost of metabolic rent.
\r\nSo if your plant are yieding bout a hundred calories.
\r\nYour yield will only be ten in the birdies and the bees.
\r\nAnd seven hundred calories in algae in the sea,
\r\nIn primary consumers it will yield you seventy.
\r\nSome other ways of getting food are really out of sight.
\r\nYou could be a predator or be a parasite.
\r\nA predator eats meat, a parasite eats your insites,
\r\nAnd if you’re a decompoer you will eat me when I die!
\r\nAnd if you know this ‘bout food chains you can really take the cake.
\r\nWhen energy gose through it dosen’t last, it dissipates.
\r\nBut hutrients infood chains meet a very different fate,
\r\nThey recycle and they circulate forever, ain’t that great!
\r\nJust remember ther’s no beings in this world that live alone.
\r\nPopulations form communities, where all do make their homes.
\r\nThough your niche may be determining the role that you are playing,
\r\nEvery creature live or dead is in s food chain!
\r\n
