Christmas 1915
On the western front the guns all died away
\r\nAnd laying in the mud on bags of sand
\r\nWe heard a German sing from no man's land
\r\nHe had tenor voice so pure and true
\r\nThe words were strange but every note we knew
\r\nSoaring ore the the living dead and dammed
\r\nThe German sang of peace from no man's land
\r\n
\r\nThey left their trenches and we left ours
\r\nBeneath tin hats the smiles bloomed like wild flowers
\r\nWith photos cigarettes and pots of wine
\r\nWe built a soldier's truce on the front line
\r\nTheir singer was a lad of 21
\r\nWe begged another song before the dawn
\r\nAnd sitting in the mud and blood and feed
\r\nHe sang again the song all longed to hear
\r\n
\r\nSilent night, no cannons roar
\r\nA king is born of peace for evermore
\r\nAll's calm, all's bright
\r\nAll brothers hand in hand
\r\nIn 19 and 15 in no man's land
\r\n
\r\nAnd in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain
\r\nAnd we killed them and they killed us again
\r\nAt night they charged we fought them hand to hand
\r\nAnd i killed the boy that sang in no man's land
\r\n
\r\nSilent night, no cannons roar
\r\nA king is born of peace for evermore
\r\nAll's calm, all's bright
\r\nAll brothers hand in hand
\r\nAnd that young soldier sings
\r\nAnd the song of peace still rings
\r\nThough the captains and all the kings
\r\nBuilt no man's land
\r\n
\r\nSleep in heavenly peace
